NWSC BOARD TOURS HOIMA WATER SUPPLY PROJECTS AHEAD OF AFCON 2027
The National Water and Sewerage Corporation Board has toured key water supply infrastructure projects in Hoima City to assess progress of ongoing works aimed at strengthening water service delivery ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
During the tour, the Board visited the ongoing Hoima Emergency Water Supply Project, that encompases a 2,000m3/day Water Treatment Plant, reservoir facilities, pipelines, and other installations being developed to increase water production, storage and distribution capacity in the city.
The Board’s tour comes as NWSC continues implementing interventions under the AFCON water supply programme, including the completed water supply stabilization to the Hoima City Stadium. The Hoima stadium water extension project, involved the development and connection of two boreholes: Mparo, with a production capacity of 25 cubic metres per hour, and Kyarwiru, with a capacity of 15 cubic metres per hour.
Both boreholes were developed, connected to the stadium and commissioned, providing a reliable water source to support the Stadium as preparations for AFCON 2027 progress.
The key highlight of the tour was the Hoima Emergency Water Supply Project, which is designed to increase water production capacity and improve the reliability of supply across the city. The Project entails the construction of an Intake on River Kafu, Water Treatment Plant at Rwoga with a capacity of 2,000 cubic metres per day, a 2.9-kilometre raw water pipeline and a 300 cubic metre storage and balancing reservoir, and 22 kilometre treated water pipeline from Kikuube to Hoima City.
Overall implementation of the Hoima Emergency Water Supply Project has reached 37%, and will be ready for commissioning by February 2027.
At the site the Board noted the excavation and concrete blinding for the Water Treatment Plant units were complete, while excavation for the Intake works stood at 90%. Steel reinforcement and concrete works for the Treatment Plant were at 15% , pipeline surveys had been completed, and power extension works had reached 50%.
The Board’s visit to the project sites enabled members to appreciate the different infrastructure components being implemented and the progress made towards establishing a more robust water supply system for Hoima City.
The Board’s assessment also comes amid preparations to extend water supply services to Kabalega International Airport, a strategic facility expected to support increased activity during AFCON 2027.
The proposed Airport Extension shall entail upgrading the Kafu Water Treatment Plant from 2,000 to 3,000 cubic metres per day, laying a 36 kilometre DN200 uPVC/steel bulk transfer pipeline and constructing a 200-cubic-metre storage reservoir at the airport.
The Projects form part of NWSC’s broader efforts to strengthen water supply infrastructure in Hoima and ensure that essential facilities are adequately served as Uganda prepares to host AFCON 2027.
