Fawe Empowers 480 Youth Acess University Education

Atleast 480 youth have been given a second chance to pursue degree programmes courtesy of Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) Uganda following completion of Higher Education Access Certificate (HEAC), an accredited programme that enables students who do not meet the standard university entry requirements to qualify for admission into degree programmes, particularly in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields.
FAWE Uganda Deputy Executive Director Susan Opok Tumusiime said the programme was established to address the growing number of young people who are excluded from higher education despite having the potential to succeed.
“These are students who got one principal pass and two subsidiaries, one principal pass and a failure, or even three subsidiaries. Under the normal system, many of them would not access university education,” Tumusiime said.
She noted that Uganda’s higher education enrolment remains low at about 6.8 per cent, compared to the Sub-Saharan African average of 15 per cent, partly because many learners fail to meet direct admission requirements.
Under the Second Chance Pathways for Marginalised Girls and Young People in Higher Education project, funded by the Mastercard Foundation, FAWE Uganda is supporting learners from disadvantaged backgrounds to access university education through the bridging programme.
Tumusiime said the latest cohort of 482 students completed the one-year programme at 14 universities across the country and are now ready to transition into degree programmes.
“Many of these students have performed exceptionally well, with some attaining cumulative grade point averages above 4.5. This demonstrates that they had the potential all along but lacked the opportunity,” she said.
She encouraged beneficiaries, especially female students, to remain focused on their studies and avoid activities that could affect their academic progress.
“We are telling the girls to prioritise their education and future aspirations. We want them to complete their studies and become empowered women who can transform their communities,” Tumusiime said.
FAWE Uganda Board Chairperson Margaret Atim said the organisation is committed to ensuring that vulnerable learners, especially girls, complete their education journey.
“These are intelligent young people who were disadvantaged by circumstances beyond their control. Through this programme, they now have another opportunity to realise their dreams,” Atim said.
She added that the graduates are expected to pursue degree programmes and eventually contribute to national development through professional careers.
The Principal of Uganda Technical College Lira, Jacob Akunubere, said many learners miss out on university opportunities due to challenges such as limited learning resources, financial constraints and inadequate access to quality teaching.
“Failure does not always mean lack of ability. This programme has proved that when students are given another chance, many of them excel,” Akunubere said.
He called for increased awareness about the programme, noting that many students and parents are still unaware of alternative pathways to university education.
Demand for the scholarships continues to exceed available opportunities. FAWE officials revealed that the first intake admitted about 500 learners from more than 8,600 applicants, while the second cohort attracted over 9,100 applications.
The Higher Education Access Certificate is accredited by the National Council for Higher Education and the Ministry of Education and Sports and provides an alternative pathway for students who do not qualify for direct university admission.
FAWE Uganda says the programme, which is being implemented in 65 districts, aims to support 2,000 young people to access higher education by 2030.

Rooted in the principles of Science, Engineering, Environment, Technology, and Agriculture (SEETA), the university is designed to equip students with practical skills, innovative thinking, and the knowledge needed to address real-world challenges.
Man Behind Seeta Education Empire
Dr John Chrysostom Muyingo is a distinguished Ugandan educationist, academic administrator, entrepreneur, and public servant whose lifelong commitment to education laid the foundation for the establishment of Seeta High School and Now Seeta University.
Born in Bamunanika County, Luweero District in Uganda, Dr. Muyingo developed a passion for learning and leadership at an early age. His academic journey led him to Makerere University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science with Education, majoring in Mathematics and Chemistry. He later obtained a Master of Arts in Educational Management and subsequently a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Education, specializing in higher education financing and management.
His academic training equipped him with a strong foundation in both classroom instruction and institutional leadership, shaping his lifelong mission to strengthen education systems.
Dr. Muyingo began his professional career as a secondary school teacher, where he quickly distinguished himself through dedication, discipline, and academic excellence. He later served in leadership roles at several institutions before becoming Headteacher of Uganda Martyrs’ Secondary School Namugongo.
Under his stewardship, the school grew into one of the most respected secondary institutions in Uganda, recognized for outstanding academic performance, character formation, and co-curricular excellence. His leadership philosophy emphasized holistic education — nurturing intellectual ability, moral integrity, leadership skills, and social responsibility.
Beyond secondary education, Dr. Muyingo has been instrumental in establishing and supporting several educational institutions, expanding access to quality learning opportunities for thousands of students.
In recognition of his contribution to education, Dr. Muyingo was elected Member of Parliament for Bamunanika County and later appointed State Minister for Higher Education in the Government of Uganda.
In this role, he has championed:
Strengthening quality assurance in universities
Expansion of higher education access
Student financing and loan schemes
Research development and innovation
Digital transformation and e-learning
His work has significantly contributed to policy reforms and capacity building within Uganda’s higher education sector.
Driven by a vision to expand opportunities beyond secondary education, Dr. Muyingo founded this University to serve as a center of excellence in teaching, research, innovation, and community engagement.
His vision for the University is grounded in:
Academic rigor and professional competence
Ethical leadership and integrity
Innovation and entrepreneurship
Community transformation and national development
Global competitiveness rooted in strong moral values
He believes that universities must not only produce graduates but also shape responsible citizens capable of addressing societal challenges.
Dr. Muyingo’s leadership is anchored in discipline, service, faith-based values, and transformative impact. He advocates for education that balances knowledge acquisition with character formation, preparing students to excel professionally while remaining socially responsible.
Through decades of service in education and public leadership, Dr. Muyingo has influenced thousands of students, educators, and policymakers. His legacy continues to shape institutions, communities, and the broader education landscape in Uganda.
As Founder, his enduring commitment remains a guiding pillar of the University’s mission, vision, and strategic direction
.He graduated in 1986 with a Bachelor of Science with a Diploma in Education
He also holds a Master of Arts in Educational Management, obtained in 1996, and a Doctor of Philosophy obtained in 2004, both from Makerere University

Equity Bank Donates Brand New Bus to Busoga High School To Enhance Safety

Equity Bank Uganda has financed the acquisition of a new 67-seater school bus for Busoga High School in Kamuli, adding momentum to efforts to improve learner safety as schools face heightened scrutiny over transport standards following a series of fatal road accidents involving students.

The 2025 Isuzu bus, handed over to the school on Thursday, is equipped with onboard surveillance cameras designed to improve monitoring, accountability and safety during school journeys.

Its arrival comes against the backdrop of growing national concern over school transport after several crashes involving school vehicles claimed the lives of learners, prompting the Ministry of Education and Sports to suspend school tours and trips pending investigations and a review of safety practices.

The investment also reflects a growing role for financial institutions in enabling schools to acquire modern transport fleets through asset financing rather than relying solely on outright purchases.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Busoga High School Board Chairperson Dr. Kakuba Mpango reminded the driver that school transport carries an exceptional responsibility.

“A school bus carries the future of this nation,” he said, urging strict adherence to traffic regulations and professional driving standards.

The school also held a blessing ceremony for the new vehicle and its driver, underscoring the importance placed on the safety of every journey undertaken by the institution.

Kamuli Municipal Education Officer Ivan Wakabi described dedicated school transport as an important investment in learner welfare, particularly for students who would otherwise travel long distances on foot or rely on unregulated public transport.

“When students walk two to three kilometres to and from school every day, they are exposed to traffic hazards and accidents,” Wakabi said. “This new bus provides a safe, controlled environment where our learners are protected on their daily commute.”

He said the acquisition of modern, roadworthy school buses should become part of broader efforts to reduce road crashes involving learners, alongside regular vehicle maintenance, responsible driving and strict compliance with traffic regulations.

The handover echoes recent calls by UNICEF for schools and transport operators to prioritise roadworthy vehicles and stronger safety measures to prevent avoidable child deaths on Uganda’s roads.

For Equity Bank Uganda, the transaction illustrates how asset financing is becoming an increasingly important tool for educational institutions seeking to invest in infrastructure while preserving working capital.

Tom Mwanje, the bank’s Jinja Branch Manager, said schools require flexible financing options that extend beyond traditional lending.

He said the bank offers asset financing for vehicles and equipment, development financing for infrastructure such as classrooms, dormitories and laboratories, and bridge financing to help institutions manage short-term operational needs including payroll and maintenance.

“Access to modern transport is essential not only for academic and co-curricular activities but also for safeguarding the lives of learners and staff,” Mwanje said.

The new bus is expected to strengthen Busoga High School’s transport capacity while giving parents greater confidence in the safety of their children during school travel.

Beyond a single vehicle, education stakeholders say the initiative highlights the need for a coordinated approach to learner safety involving schools, parents, financial institutions, transport regulators and government agencies.

As Uganda reviews school transport practices in the wake of recent tragedies, investments in safer vehicles, better driver training and improved maintenance standards are increasingly being viewed not simply as operational upgrades, but as essential measures to protect learners and sustain confidence in the education system.

First Daughter Patience Rwabwogo, the founder and lead pastor of Covenant Nations Church (CNC), is set to be consecrated as an Episcopal Bishop of Covenant Nations Churches in Uganda and beyond.

As the second-born daughter of President Yoweri Museveni, she balances ministry, business, and family. She is married, has four children, and is highly regarded by her father for her active role in preaching the gospel.

The consecration is scheduled for August 23 and will be held alongside celebrations marking 20 years of the church, which is based in Luzira, a Kampala suburb.

According to the First Daughter, worship ministers Emmanuel Roro and Helen Yilma from Israel will also lead worship during the celebrations.

The event will mark two decades since Covenant Nations Church began as a small house fellowship before growing into a ministry with a presence in Uganda and beyond.

Pastor Patience said the church’s 20-year journey is a testimony to what she described as God’s faithfulness.

“The year began with the assurance from Luke 1:37 that ‘nothing will be impossible with God,’ and we have watched that promise unfold before our eyes,” she said.

She added: “As we look back over 20 years, we are overwhelmed by God’s goodness. Covenant Nations Church has exceeded every expectation, growing from a humble house church into a ministry touching lives across Uganda and beyond.”

Pastor Patience described her consecration as a divine calling rather than a personal achievement, saying it comes with a greater responsibility to serve God’s people.

“As scripture reminds us, promotion comes from the Lord. I receive this calling with humility and gratitude because it carries greater responsibility to serve God’s people,” she said.

She invited Christians in Uganda and beyond to join the celebrations and give thanks for what she described as God’s faithfulness throughout Covenant Nations Church’s 20-year journey.

Key Background & Ministry

She founded Covenant Nations Church, which celebrated its 20th anniversary with her consecration as an episcopal bishop on August 23, 2026.
